Golden opportunity gone

Re: "Lehigh lots slip away," Jan. 6. This excellent report exposed Lee County government's biggest local failure of the past decade and our community's biggest challenge.

Shame on the Lee County Department of Community Development and the county commissioners. They lost a golden opportunity to secure desperately needed land for public use in Lehigh. Just three years ago, more than 23,000 lots were on the delinquent tax rolls, ripe for acquisition. We will live with the consequences of this lack of foresight for generations.

And Lee County government continues to fritter away the few Lehigh parcels left for schools, parks, shopping centers, green space, water recharge.

Led by out-of-touch Commissioner John Albion, the board is recklessly rezoning hundreds of acres of Lehigh farmland designated for public use, for high-density, multi-family projects. This residential growth at the expense of open space fuels the fire; it must be slowed while a community plan is devised.

But, as the citizens of Pine Island know all too well, even a good growth management plan is no guarantee that these county commissioners will abide by it. Unfortunately for Lee County citizens, "Smart Growth" really means that if you're smart enough to be a big developer, you're smart enough to dictate where all the growth goes.

IS THIS ONE OF ALBION'S MANY PRIVATE DEVELOPER MEETINGS

GROWTH SUMMIT
• What: Ben Hill Griffin/Corkscrew Road Growth Summit
• When: Scheduled for late February
• Who: Representatives of development, government and community groups. Event will not be open to the general public.

"I feel very strongly that when we accepted the university and airport — regional facilities — we have the obligation to make sure the area has regional access," Albion said.

So were is Lehigh???? doesnot Lehigh need access to the university, airport and regional facilities -- You as Lehigh's Commissioner has have the obligation to make sure the area has regional access

Albion said "I'm not going in close-minded. But to date, the numbers we're looking at put a degree of fear in you. You've got to get on your horse and get these projects going."

So the question is Mr. Albion why are you causing more problems to the community??
